The Pump Hunt Continues
Had the first look at an insulin pump today. Our rep came around and showed us the Cozmo pump.
Overall the features in the Cozmo seem a little better than the Animas. And the next software upgrade - in July is adding a food database, which I think would be good for when Cade is at school.
The things to like:
Next up... Animas - next week.
Overall the features in the Cozmo seem a little better than the Animas. And the next software upgrade - in July is adding a food database, which I think would be good for when Cade is at school.
The things to like:
- The rep is really responsive and pro-active.
- The Cozmo seems to have better alarms, important when Cade is with other people, than the Animas.
- The navigation on the pump seems a little easier than the Animas, my wife pointed out it was like her nokia phone.
- The software to download/upload to the computer is included.
- It seems to offer more personalization features, like naming the pump and other details - my son will like that.
- The upgrades are free, or at least the software upgrades.
- It's kinda ugly - I know it's not important, but I'm tech a guy - can't help it. The Animas is a nicer looking device.
- The Animas has a small basal and bolus, although I'm getting mix stories on that. Cade is currently on about 14 units total, so in general he would not need the lower basal that the Animas offers.
- The rep company here in NZ is pretty small the pumps are not going to be distributed by Smiths directly, I'm concerned if there are any problems where I'll be able to go.
Next up... Animas - next week.

Cozmo does have some incredible features from their recent upgrade (hypo manager, basal check) not available on Animas. The free software upgrades are a big plus. We have Animas and have to wait for and pay for our upgrade, could be in the $400 plus range, depends on when you purchased your pump. I am not happy with the software that comes with the pump, because our Animas does not store BGs and we do not use or want to use the BS meter that downloads onto the computer that goes with pump software. The newest model does, though, so that problem has been solved. Being a female, looks are everything to her, so she chose Animas. Animas is the smallest pump. And it has proven to be a great pump. Animas is doing a big upgrade again next year. Animas Reps-- let me just say that anytime I call tech support day or night, I get a callback within ten minutes flat! And technical problems were either solved or new pump sent and arrived within two days. I live in the U.S. though. I do not find the Animas at all difficult to operate or scroll through; neither did she, and she was eight when diagnosed. Very simple pump to use and operate; sturdy. At this particular moment in time, due to the upgrade, I would chose Cozmo. Whichever pump you choose, it is imperative you have good pump tech support in place for you 24 hours if possible.
Just an addendum to my last post. We personally could not get along without the .025 increments Animas offers. Our CDE told us the same thing, that we do not need and will never use this feature. These smaller increments have proven invaluable to us, we could not at the moment get along without them. Her current basal is about 10.5. She gets 29, 30 units per day. Love the .025 increments, although there is a away to get around this limitation on the other pumps by varying the basal and changing back and forth hour by hour.
